In-app purchasing: Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary iOS app

Company: Merriam-Webster
Role: UX and UI, user testing

Our iOS and Android apps are a valuable tool for students, professional writers and editors, and everyone in between. While most of our users are looking for our Collegiate dictionary (the same primary reference available on merriam-webster.com), we have a lot more content to offer.

In order to provide an enhanced experience within our iOS app, we added the ability to purchase additional references (such as our Medical and Legal dictionaries) as a subscription via an in-app purchase. Along with a more robust dictionary experience, the subscription also provides the user with an ad-free experience.

To further refine this feature, we conducted user testing to determine the optimal placement for the toggles between references and the call-to-action that guides the user to make a purchase if they’re interested.
